But even with proper care and maintenance, things can go wrong sometimes.

Common Heat Pump Problems

• NO HEAT – Check your heat pump thermostat to see if it’s on and turned to heat. You might also have an improperly wired thermostat (especially if you just got a new one) or have a tripped circuit breaker.
• NOT ENOUGH HEAT – Check your air filter. Dirt and grime can clog filters and other parts of your system, reducing air flow and damaging your pump’s compressor. If your filter is clean, you could have blocked ducts, faulty valves, or a problem with the refrigerant.
• BLOWING COLD AIR – You probably have an issue with your thermostat or air handler. However, your heat pump could just temporarily be in defrost mode.
• CYCLING PROBLEMS – You could have any of these problems:
• Dirty air filter
• Broken blower
• Thermostat needs batteries
• Thermostat needs adjustment
• Heat pump temperature set too high
• MAKING NOISES – You might just have a screw loose (literally). Make sure everything is secured tightly. If you hear a grinding or high-pitched squealing, turn off your heat pump right away. You could have a bigger problem, like worn-out motor bearings.
